Woman in serious condition after SUV crashes into restaurant
A woman is in the hospital in serious condition after an SUV crashed into a restaurant Saturday night.
Egg Roll King restaurant, located on the corner of Coolidge and West Washington Street, had a gaping hole where the SUV went in. The driver of the SUV told authorities she was traveling eastbound on Washington when a van pulled in front of her, causing her to crash into the building.
When emergency crews arrived on the scene, they found a woman, later identified as Karla Vanessa Flores, trapped under debris and pinned between the car and the serving counter inside the restaurant.. It took the Wayne Township rescue crews 10 minutes to free the Flores, who was then taken to Wishard Hospital.
Family members said Sunday Flores has several broken bones, including her pelvis and her spine.
"She is scared and wants us to tell her the truth, because she thinks she is not going to be able to walk. They told us she can feel her legs and everything," a family member told Eyewitness News through a translator.
Wayne Township and Indianapolis firefighters were worried about the building collapsing following the crash as the building suffered severe structural damage, and the IFD Structural Collapse and Rescue Team was called to the scene. The team built a shoring system to prevent further collapse.
The Marion County Health Department was also called to the scene, and the Egg Roll King restaurant will be closed until further notice. The driver and passenger of the SUV were not injured and were treated at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
Flores is scheduled for surgery Monday morning.
