Indianapolis Metro Police are investigating a woman found dead of apparent gunshot wounds in the basement of an east side home.

Officers were called to a home in the 600 block of N. Linwood Avenue, which is off East 10th Street between Sherman and Emerson Avenue.

A relative told police they found the woman, identified as 21-year-old Shannon Kleeman, dead in the basement.

Kleeman's sister was looking for the woman and found blood in the basement. Her screams alerted neighbors, who came to see what was wrong. The sister told police she found Kleeman in the basement, possibly deceased.

"That child did not deserve that. She did not deserve what happened to her. It's just unconscionable what they did to her," said Treva Bryant, one of the neighbors who ran to help.

Homicide investigators are processing the crime scene and interviewing possible witnesses. The Marion County Forensics Agency is also assisting.

The Marion County coroner will do an autopsy to determine the manner of death.
