Winter storm causes airport delays in Indianapolis
A winter storm system that blew through Indiana early Friday caused numerous flight cancellations at the Indianapolis International Airport.
Half of all the airport's scheduled flights were canceled between 5:00 and 10:00 am. The airport was able to keep one runway open overnight so FedEx planes could take off and land.
Crews were applying de-icer to planes early Friday to prepare for take-off. Pilots only have 30 minutes to get off the ground once de-icer is applied.
Some passengers had trouble rebooking their flights because they were already overbooked.
By 8:00 am Friday, most main roads and highways in central Indiana were clear, with some slush or ice in turning lanes. Side streets remained ice-covered and slick, but with temperatures expected to rise into the low 40s, most of that should melt off today.
Winter storm batters Midwest
The same storm system caused slick roads and reduced visibility in southern Wisconsin, northeast Iowa and in Chicago. It shuttered airports in Missouri and buried parts of Kansas as it moved northeast. It's left at least two dead across the country.
People living in the upper Midwest and Great Lakes area likely will get the same winter storm that pounded states from Kansas to Illinois Thursday, forcing schools and airports to close and interrupting legislative sessions in some states.
Wind gusts of 30 mph are expected to churn-up snow that fell overnight in southern Wisconsin, where forecasters have warned residents in the Milwaukee area of slick roads and reduced visibility. The same was expected in northeast Iowa, where residents could wake up to as much as 7 inches of new snow, while nearly 200 snowplows were deployed overnight in Chicago.
At a Travel Centers of America truck stop in the central Illinois city of Effingham, all of the 137 parking spaces were filled by truckers unwilling to drive through the storm overnight.
The storm system swirled to the north and east late Thursday, its snow, sleet and freezing rain prompting winter storm across the region - and leaving some impressive snow accumulations.
