Officials have opened a visitors pavilion aimed at promoting tourism in southeastern Indiana.

The Whitewater Valley Visitors Pavilion that opened Thursday in Metamora will promote tourism destinations along the Whitewater Canal Scenic Byway in Indiana and the Presidential Pathways Scenic Byway in southwestern Ohio.

The Indiana Office of Tourism Development says the pavilion will serve six Indiana counties - Wayne, Union, Fayette, Franklin, Ripley and Dearborn - and two in Ohio: Hamilton and Butler.

Indiana tourism development chief Mark Newman says "generations of artisans have created a legacy of creativity" for the region and the pavilion will allow visitors to experience its rich culture.

Regional arts and other products will be displayed at the pavilion about 60 miles southeast of Indianapolis.
