Vision Racing starts letter campaign to find sponsorship
Indianapolis - Days after announcing they were suspending operations, Vision Racing is starting a letter-writing campaign.
The team, owned by former IMS CEO Tony George, announced Thursday they were shutting down due to a lack of sponsorship. In response to numerous requests for ways to help bring the team back, Vision posted a note on their Facebook fan page Saturday night, asking willing fans to send them letters that can be passed along to potential and past sponsors.
"Think of it as a letter of reference that we can use to find and secure sponsors that want your business," the note read.
The letter also mentioned Menards, which has been a sponsor of driver Ed Carpenter's No. 20 car, which finished second at Kentucky Speedway last year in one of the closest finishes in IndyCar history.
"We are not asking you to harass our friends at Menards. In fact, all we'd like you to do is let them know that you still support us and appreciate the support Menards has shown us," the letter continued. "The folks at Menards love racing as much as you do, but they also have difficult decisions to make sometimes."
The downturn in the economy has left several teams struggling for sponsorship. Rahal Letterman Racing, who won the 2004 Indianapolis 500 with driver Buddy Rice and fourth in the 2005 race with Danica Patrick, raced only at Indianapolis in 2009 due to a lack of sponsorships.
The Vision letter encouraged all race fans to send letters of support to their favorite race team.
"The ongoing economic environment has been difficult on all the IndyCar teams and their sponsors. Sponsors need to know that you are still there to support open-wheel racing, the Indy Racing League, teams and sponsors," the note read. "If you don't want to do this for us, then please consider doing it for the teams/drivers you do support or for the league as a whole."
The league announced a six-year, multi-million dollar sponsorship deal with IZOD last November, marking the first time since 2002 that it will have a title sponsor.
Vision's public relations department hopes to begin sending the letters to sponsors as quickly as possible.
"We have no doubt this will have a positive impact and we will keep you posted on our progress, because any success we have, on and off the track, will be because of our fans and your support," the Facebook posting read.
