A vacant house on the south side went up in flames early this morning.  Fire investigators say the home is a total loss.

The Indianapolis Fire Department was dispatched to 3320 Newhart Street at 3:23 a.m. Saturday.  When crews arrived on the scene, heavy fire was showing.  Officials say flames could be seen from a mile away.

Fire officials say their defensive attack on the fire was labor intensive and lengthy because the nearest fire hydrant was a mile and a half away.

It took crews about an hour to get the fire under control.

Investigators say the house was a total loss.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
