US 31 construction project to start April 4 in Carmel
A major road construction project will force thousands of drivers to take a big detour in Hamilton County.
INDOT plans to close a stretch of US 31 through the center of Carmel for more than seven months. The highway will be closed between Old Meridian Street and 136th Street on April 4 and won't reopen until Thanksgiving. Workers plan to remove traffic lights and turn the road into a freeway.
The official detour around the project is on Keystone Parkway and other nearby roads. Businesses along US 31 and nearby homeowners will likely see more traffic in their neighborhoods.
"It's going to be a huge inconvenience, just due to the fact that there's not a great alternate route for us to take," said Carmel resident Dan Briggs.
"I hate traffic. I moved from Chicago to avoid traffic, so this is like a huge surprise," said Carmel resident Sarah Cooper.
INDOT is meeting with businesses this week to prepare them for the road closure. There will be two open houses next month for the public, including one at Carmel High School on March 18 and one at Westfield Middle School on March 19. Both meetings are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
