UPDATE: Mother, son die in Monroe County murder-suicide

A 46-year-old woman shot her 15-year-old son Thursday morning, lit their house on fire and then shot herself, according to police.

The Monroe County coroner Friday ruled 15-year-old Parker Gilleland Wampler's death a homicide and his mother Carla Gilleland's death a suicide. Both were found Thursday morning inside their burning house in the 7300 block of North Red Hill Road, set in the woods just northwest of Ellettsville in Monroe County about 45 miles southwest of Indianapolis.

A neighbor told Eyewitness News he heard two pops before seeing flames.

"I got my dad up, went outside," said the neighbor, who tried to get the victims out of the house. "It was just too hot."

Monroe County Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Brad Swain said neighbors reported Carla Gilliland had made comments about harming her son and herself. Another witness to the fire said she was going through a difficult time the last few weeks because of a family breakup.

"She's just been sad lately, depressed. Some issues that she didn't share," said a neighbor named Angel. "Tried to help out as much as we could. It's just a tragedy."

Parker Gilliland Wampler was a basketball player at his high school in Ellettsville.

The fire was extensive and firefighters considered the home a total loss.
