A special honor Saturday for a group of volunteers who've made a huge impact in improving our community.

The United Way presented awards to 11 people Saturday morning during their annual Diversity Volunteer breakfast at the Indiana Convention Center.

Award-winning actor and humanitarian Louis Gossett, Jr. was the keynote speaker. His message targeted parents and their responsibility to make sure their kids become productive and positive members of society.

"We need to teach these young people how to live, to take care of women," Gossett said. "What you give is how you get. That's the way we survived up until now. And we've kind of forgotten it. So God comes in the picture when we give."

All but two of the volunteers presented with awards this year were from Indianapolis.
