Ultra-marathon to go on as scheduled in NE Indiana
The organizers of a 100-mile ultra-marathon say the inaugural northeastern Indiana event will proceed as planned this weekend following Monday's deadly explosions at the Boston Marathon.
Indiana Trail 100 spokesman Mike Pfefferkorn says many of the ultra-marathon's 181 registered runners are former Boston Marathon competitors and everyone involved in the event is mindful of safety following the Boston bombings.
Saturday and Sunday's ultra-marathon will be staged on a 16 2/3-mile trail inside Chain O' Lakes State Park about 30 miles north of Fort Wayne.
Pfefferkorn tells The Herald Republican that aside from the park's security, organizers plan to have ham radio and medical personnel on-site for the event.
He says most ultra-marathons are held in wooded settings similar to Chain O' Lakes State Park, not in urban areas.
