Two teens die in Carroll County crash
A 17-year-old teenager from Cutler and his 14-year-old passenger died Thursday when the driver failed to yield to a semi tractor-trailer.
It happened Thursday evening at the intersection of US 421 and County Road 300 South. That's about six miles south of Delphi.
According to police, 17-year-old Christopher Mummert of Cutler was driving his 1996 Chevy Lumina eastbound on CR 300 South, west of the US 421 intersection. Hunter Walker, 14, of Flora, was his passenger.
According to the Carroll County Sheriff's Department, Mummert drove through the intersection without stopping and yielding to the northbound semi-tractor/trailer.
The intersection is posted with stop signs for westbound and eastbound traffic on County Road 300 South to stop at the intersection with US 421.
Sukhminder Karda, 48, of Ontario, Canada, was northbound on US 421, approaching the intersection from the south. Karda did not have time to slow or even brake, according witness statements at the scene, because the eastbound vehicle made no apparent effort to stop.
Police believe Mummert and Walker were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Karda was wearing his seatbelt.
At this point, police don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. Toxicology reports are pending.
