Police say two men are dead after a shooting in the 3400 block of Hovey Street. Officers responded to multiple calls reporting shots fired around 1:30 Saturday morning.

The incident happened about four blocks south of the Indiana State Fairgrounds, on the north side.

Police say one man was found inside a truck and the other just outside of the vehicle.  The men were identified Saturday as Carlos Jefferson, 22, and Julius Douglas, 23, both of Indianapolis.

Jefferson and Douglas were pronounced dead at the scene.

"It sounded like it was in my back yard," said neighbor Sybil Douglas. "That kind of startled me, I was dozing and then 'pow pow pow' and it made me sit right up."

Detectives were able to gather multiple shell casings at the scene Saturday morning, but say they have no witnesses to the crime.  They also have no motive, or information on a suspect or suspects at this time.

Detective say they do not believe this was random act and are exploring whether or not narcotics played a role.

Hovey Street is a community that's still recovering after a quadruple homicide in the 3200 block back in 2008.

As the healing continues, Reverend Malachi Walker's nearby church works to help that mission.

"We do a lot of walking in the community in this area," he said.

The walks are to promote peace and to coach people to use words, not weapons or violence to resolve issues.

"We felt that it's very necessary and valuable for the faith based community to get out in neighborhoods," Rev. Walker said.

He feels progress has been made in this community, but Saturday that progress went in the wrong direction.

"To have another double homicide, it's heartbreaking right now and it just shows that this is a never ending job to canvas the community and to let the community know the church is out here," he said.
