Two major Indianapolis health care providers have called off their plans for a partnership.

The Indianapolis Star and the Indianapolis Business Journal report Eskenazi Health and Community Health Network announced Thursday that a partnership would face too many financial and legal hurdles.

The IBJ says the two systems still hold out hope to work together in some fashion, but doing so could require Congress to change federal tax laws.

The pair announced plans in February 2013 to form a joint operating partnership to form common strategies, pricing and clinical collaborations. The new partnership would have been positioned to take advantage of changes under the health insurance overhaul.

But hospital officials aren't saying some sort of deal isn't completely impossible.
