Two Indiana high school seniors have been named presidential scholars for this year.

The U.S. Department of Education said Monday the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars had selected Erika Kirgios of Granger, a student at Penn High School in Mishawaka, and James Wang of Zionsville, a student at University High School in Carmel.

Selections are based on performance on the College Board SAT and ACT exams, academic success, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, community service, leadership and commitment to high ideals. The commission selects one female student and one male student from each state.

Each honoree will receive a Presidential Scholar Medallion at a June 16 ceremony.
