Two dead in shooting at east Indianapolis gas station
A shooting has left two people dead at a gas station on the east side of Indianapolis.
The shooting occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday at the CITGO gas station near E. 19th Street and Rural Street. One victim died at the scene, the other passed away a short time later at Eskenazi Health.
Police say a group of four men stopped at the gas station. At least one of the men got out of the car to go into the store when he and the other victim were shot by an unknown suspect.
Multiple bullet holes were found in the front door of the car the victims had been riding in.
The suspect, who was outside of the store at the time of the shooting, is described as a black male wearing all black clothing. He fled the scene after the shooting.
A motive for the shooting is not known at this time and the victims' names and ages have not yet been determined.
"It's got to stop. The madness (has) got to stop," said a bystander at the scene.
Emotions ran high at the scene. A number of friends and family of the victims came to the scene emotional. One of the family members ran under police crime tape trying to get close to the victim's body, ignoring police orders. He was arrested for assaulting a police officer and on an outstanding warrant for a driving offense.
Police are checking to see if the crime was captured on store surveillance cameras.
"This has got to stop. This is crazy," said a bystander of the city's 11th and 12th murders of the year.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call IMPD at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS. Callers may also text "INDYCS" plus tip information to 274627 (CRIMES).
