Two Illinois men died in a crash Friday afternoon that closed the northbound lanes of I-65 at the Indianapolis north split.

The crash involved a PPF Express box truck which overturned at around 2:30 pm at the 112.8 mile marker. The truck was hauling wine.

I-65 NB traffic is being diverted to EB I-70 at the north split. I-65 is closed at the north split. Police reopened the highway around 7 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses told Indiana State troopers that the driver was going too fast. According to investigators, the truck driver failed to negotiate the curve on NB I-65 just north of the I-65/I-70 split. The truck went off the roadway and overturned. The driver was partially ejected.

The driver, 43-year-old Joey L. Stasik, and his passenger, 30-year-old Jason S. Bauer, both from Illinois, were pronounced dead at the scene.

One firefighter was transported to Methodist Hospital for heat related issues.

Firefighters on the scene had to utilize extra stabilization precautions due to the position of the vehicle as well as extremely dry conditions where the vehicle came to rest. Firefighters were able to safely stabilize the vehicle with struts and chain and pulley system from the squad located above the scene.
