A truck driver stopped for having a child in his lap while driving is awaiting extradition to California on felony charges.

State police stopped 60-year-old Norman Shields on I-65 north of Lafayette after receiving tips from other drivers about the child. The trooper making the traffic stop found a two-year-old child sitting on Shields' lap.

Shields had permission from the trucking company to let the child ride along. The child's mother also gave Shields, who is from Chicago, permission to take the child with him.

The trooper then learned Shields was wanted on a felony warrant out of California for Lewd Acts with a Child Under the age of 14. The charge was initially filed in 1989.

Shields was taken into custody at the scene and was taken to the Tippecanoe County Jail to await extradition to Orange County, California.

Child Protective Services assumed custody of the child after a discussion with the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor's Office.
