Three people are in custody following a bank robbery in Yorktown Tuesday afternoon.

It happened at 1401 North Nebo Road at the First Merchants Bank. Police say a gunman opened fire on a Yorktown police officer as he left the bank. Officers returned fire, striking one suspect in the abdomen.

Two suspects were taken into custody immediately following the incident. Police set up a large perimeter in the area, believing a third suspect was in a wooded area.

Police later apprehended a man fitting the rough description of a bank robbery suspect. The man was walking along McGalliard Road, about a mile from the robbery and shooting scene.

He has been taken in for questioning, but police are still searching, in case the man is not the possible third suspect they were looking for.

The Star Press reports that the search for the third suspect was impacting voting at a polling site at a nearby church.

There was just an hour left to vote before the polls closed, and the county clerk said he was working with the county Emergency Management Agency to make sure voters could get to the polling place at University Christian Church on Nebo Road.

A neighborhood association has also advised neighbors nearby to lock their doors and stay inside Tuesday night.

This is a developing story that will be updated.
