Three facing murder, robbery charges in shooting death of store clerk

Police said the clerk shot at this convenience store died at Wishard.

Three people are facing murder and other charges after a pair of robberies that left a store clerk dead early Wednesday.

The clerk was shot and killed in a robbery at the Ricker's gas station at 38th and High School Road at roughly 3:00 am.

"When officers arrived, they did find a person who had been shot who was a clerk of the store. He was transported to Wishard Hospital in critical condition where he later, unfortunately, passed away," said IMPD Officer Kendale Adams.

Forty-five minutes later, another gas station was held up at 71st and Keystone on the northeast side. Police began chasing the suspects after that robbery.

"We were able to review video here and talk to eyewitnesses here at the store. We were able to determine a general description that we believe fit the other two from the other robbery at 71st and Keystone," said Adams.

An officer spotted the suspects' silver car near 64th and Keystone and tried to pull the vehicle over, but the driver took off. Police used a special maneuver to stop the car at 38th and Keystone. Police found a handgun that one of the suspects dropped near the car.

The chase ended at 38th and Keystone when two suspects were caught. A stun gun was used on a male suspect, who was taken to the hospital.

A third suspect was tracked down about two blocks away. Officers with rifles and a K-9 spent more than two hours in a nearby neighborhood looking for the suspect. He was apprehended shortly after 6:30 am in the 3700 block of Temple.

The suspects, 19-year-old Shayne Thompson, 20-year-old Jania Hudson, and 20-year-old Ryan Clark, all of Indianapolis, have been preliminarily charged with Murder, Robbery and Resisting Law Enforcement. Detectives will meet with Marion County prosecutors later this week to file formal charges.

Adams said the clerk's identity will not be shared until his relatives are notified.
