Carmel firefighters say a house fire that caused extensive damage to a home Wednesday morning started in the attic, then spread to the garage and sun room.

Firefighters were called to the 13000 block of Versailles at around 2:00 am. That's just south of 136th Street and west of Oak Ridge Road.

The homeowner, David Lowe, told Eyewitness News the smoke alarm woke him up. Three adults were home at the time and were able to escape to safety "as quickly as we could," Lowe said.  He also said their pets were able to get out.

The fire was burning out the back of the house when crews arrived.

The house had significant damage above the garage, while a neighboring house was damaged to a lesser extent.

Damage to the residence where the fire started is estimated to be in excess of $100,000. Damage to the neighbor's house is estimated to be $20,000.

The cause has not been determined.

Westfield firefighters also assisted at the scene.
