Teen panhandling with infant faces neglect charge
Police in northwestern Indiana have arrested a teenage mother for child neglect after officers spotted her panhandling with her baby clad only in a diaper.
Portage police say the girl had been warned before her arrest to leave the area. She told officers she was homeless because she felt her mother was "too controlling."
The (Munster) Times reports that while the girl spoke to police, an officer noticed the baby was wearing only a diaper and no clothes, while the mother wore long pants and a hooded sweatshirt. Police said the temperature at the time was 64 degrees.
The report did not include the girl's age.
The girl was taken to the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center. Child Protective Services was called to take the infant.
