Strapped district to wait extra year to park buses

A school district that wanted to end bus service this year will now have to continue it until 2017 because of a misunderstanding about a required notification period.

Muncie Community Schools requested a waiver from a three-year notice rule from the Indiana Department of Education in June. The department denied the request.

District Chief Financial Officer Mark Burkhart tells The Star Press ( ) that school officials thought the clock on the notice required by the state started when the waiver petition was filed. They learned instead that the school board must pass a resolution to officially start the clock.

That means bus service will continue until the end of the school year in 2017.

Muncie schools stand to lose almost 90 percent of the district's transportation fund.
