A northeastern Indiana sheriff's deputy has been named the 2013 County Police Officer/Deputy of the Year by the Indiana Sheriff's Association.

Steuben County Sheriff Tim Troyer says Deputy Rich McCarty received the award at the group's annual dinner Saturday.

Troyer says McCarty was cited for a June 2012 incident in which he helped apprehended two suspects and was shot at by a third during a high-speed pursuit that began near Angola and stretched into Ohio. The gunman was apprehended the following day and was convicted earlier this year of murder and attempted murder.
