Spike Lee, other celebs honored at Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration
Stars like filmmaker Spike Lee are in town this weekend for the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration.
Lee's first words to the crowd at a corporate luncheon at the Indiana Convention Center were "Go Pacers!" Lee was honored with the Outstanding Achievement Award from Indiana Black Expo.
Local businesses, dignitaries and people who want to see celebrities this weekend all attended the corporate luncheon Friday.
Indiana Black Expo announced several awards being handed out to some big name celebrities. In addition to Spike Lee, the R&B group the O'Jays, actor Billy Dee Williams and actress/author Tisha Campbell-Martin got top honors.
People attending Summer Celebration will be able to rub elbows with the stars at various events. Tisha Campbell-Martin will address the need for more education about autism in the African-American community.
"I believe that it's partly environmental, cultural; we are a group of people who don't want to believe that something like this could happen in our community. There's a lot of education about the subject matter. Our doctors - well, most doctors, but especially in our community, most doctors, teachers, educators, they haven't gotten the information," she said.
