Speedway High School student killed in apartment complex shooting
The family of a 16-year-old boy shot and killed Wednesday night is trying to make sense of his death, and so are police.
Speedway Police officers found the 10th grade Speedway High School student shot to death in the International Village Apartments, where he lived with his older brother.
Sayyid Abdul-Haqq was shot twice Wednesday night. His body was found in the parking lot. Right now, police have no motive and no suspects, and they are looking at every clue to find out who is responsible.
"I was in the shower when I heard and I was screaming for hours saying, 'This can't be true,'" said Aisha Abdul-Haqq, Sayyid's sister.
Aisha Abdul-Haqq and her sisters are trying to wrap their minds around the murder of their younger brother. He was walking home from the store when he was fatally shot.
"He is gone. He is dead. He is not going to come back. I don't get it, and I want somebody to be responsible," said Aisha.
Sayyid was a sophomore at Speedway High School. Outside of class, when you didn't find him in the library at school, he could be found at the Speedway Public Library.
Investigators are baffled about who would want to harm the teenager, as are school officials, who say Sayyid was a good student.
"Joined us as a freshman a year and a half ago. He was a student. He put that first. Getting his education was important," said Kenneth Hull, Speedway Schools superintendent.
The family even had to break the news of Sayyid's death to young nephew, who wanted to be like his big uncle. The young boy sobbed as relatives tried to comfort him.
"I want to be like my Uncle Sayyid. I am going to middle school like my Uncle Sayyid, I am going to high school like my Uncle Sayyid," said Felicia Rudolph, explaining how Sayyid's nephew talked about him.
Speedway Investigators were assisted by Marion County Crime Lab and the Marion County Coroner's Office.
Speedway Police urge anyone with information to please call Investigators at 246-4300, or Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.
Sayyid's family has set up a fund to help with funeral expenses. Make donations to:
"Benefit of Sayyid Abdul-Haqq" at any Fifth/Third Bank branch.
(Note: WTHR has verified this fund with the family, who say they need $5,000 to provide transportation for Sayyid's mother, who is coming to the funeral from out of state, and to pay for funeral costs.)
