South by Southwest Festival crash kills former Indiana resident
An Indiana native was one of two people killed when a driver crashed into a crowd at a festival in Austin, Texas.
The Auburn Star reports 27-year-old Jamie West died when the car struck a moped she was riding. Her 28-year-old husband, Evan West, was critically injured in the crash.
West and her husband both graduated from Garrett High School about 20 miles north of Fort Wayne. They had relocated to Austin.
Police say the driver in the crash, 21-year-old Rashad Owens of Killeen, Texas, was trying to avoid a sobriety check-point when he ran through a police barricade. Owens is facing charges of capital murder and aggravated assault. Police had to use a stun gun on him after he tried to flee from his car on foot, even before the vehicle came to a stop.
Twenty-three people were injured.
"SXSW is a long-time event, 27 years, and this is the first time in those 27 years that we've had an incident of this kind. We will of course as we always do continually evaluate all our events to make sure they're as safe as they can possibly be," said Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell.
