Semi fire shuts down I-70 for several hours
INDOT is now saying that all lanes of eastbound I-70 are now back open, after an overnight semi trailer fire closed all lanes near Mt. Comfort Road earlier this morning.
The driver of the truck was able to get out safely, but the cab was fully engulfed in fire when crews arrived.
Cleanup of the scene near mile marker 101 took several hours, but reopened around 7:00 a.m. Monday. This area was already congested with morning traffic going through a construction area. At one point, commuters had to detour on to Hancock County 300 North or 200 North to State Road 9 to get around the heavy back-up.
The Hancock County Sheriffs' Department says the semi was carrying farm equipment at the time of the fire. No word yet on how it started.
