Rules confusing to bicyclists, motorists alike

Bicycle accidents are on the rise in Indianapolis as the number of riders increases, and experts say part of the problem may be ignorance of the state's confusing bike laws.

The Indianapolis Star reports that bicycle accidents have increased nearly 50 percent in Marion County since 2011. And that's with special bicycle lanes on many city streets.

Advocates and legal experts say neither drivers nor cyclists understand how they're supposed to interact. Even legal experts interpret Indiana's bicycling laws in different ways.

Marion County Superior Court Judge David Dreyer says the laws are largely untested because there are few court cases.

The debate can be over as things as simple as where to ride - in middle of the lane or close to the curb.
