Roadster atop Indianapolis business for 50 years sold

A 1954 Indianapolis 500 roadster that sat atop an Indianapolis business for 50 years, becoming an iconic landmark, has been sold.

The Indianapolis Star reports reports the race car atop Safety Auto Glass since 1961 will be taken down Tuesday to undergo extensive renovation. Gary Schroeder, of Burbank, Calif., one of the purchasers, says the work is expected to take several years.

Neither Safety Auto Glass President Steve Perkins nor Schroeder would disclose its sale price. Perkins said in 2004 he had turned down an offer of $20,000 for the car.

The roadster was driven briefly by Bill Vukovich, the two-time 500 winner, and was used by Sam Hanks, the 1957 winner, in the 1955 and 1956 races, finishing second in 1956.
