Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo has been disqualified from his second-place finish at the Formula One Australian Grand Prix five hours after the race ended Sunday, due to a breach of the sport's new fuel regulations.

Red Bull said it would "appeal with immediate effect."

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg won the race, while rookie Kevin Magnussen was promoted to second place and his McLaren teammate Jenson Button to third.

Force India driver Sergio Perez was promoted to 10th for the finals points finish.

Ricciardo's disqualification was a major blow to Australian fans, who had been celebrating the first time a local driver had finished on the podium at his home race.

Race stewards said Ricciardo's car had "exceeded consistently the maximum allowed fuel flow" through the race.
