Retired police K-9 dies of cancer
After a long and courageous fight with terminal cancer, retired IMPD K-9 "Bart" has passed.
Bart was diagnosed with inoperable cancer in August 2012. IMPD K-9 Officer Ron Santa was assigned Bart in December of 2000 and together they patrolled the Indianapolis streets for 12 years.
"He is the very essence of a sheepdog protecting his flock, and this city and this department will be at a loss without his service," said Officer Santa.
"IMPD is thankful for the service that Bart provided to citizens of the Indianapolis community and we mourn Bart's death on this day," said IMPD Chief Rick Hite.
After years of capturing criminals, estimated to be over 400, and finding countless amounts of illegal drugs, Bart retired in 2008 and was unconditionally cared for by Officer Santa until his death.
