A resident's quick action to call 9-1-1 saved her apartment from significant fire damage, officials say.

Indianapolis Fire Department officials say Tracy Graham, 43, noticed smoke coming from her cabinets in her upstairs apartment at 609 Wallace Avenue and immediately called 9-1-1.

Dispatch received multiple calls of fire coming from the rear of the residence just after 9 p.m. Saturday.  When IFD crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the rear of the house.

Investigators say that because of Graham's quick response, along with calls by other responsible neighbors, the fire was extinguished within 15 minutes and the property loss was significantly reduced.

Damage is estimated to be about $40,000.

No one was injured in the fire.

A mother and teenage daughter in a second apartment also evacuated the building.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
