Reservoir opponents take message to Earth Day

Opponents of a proposed reservoir along the White River are planning to use this weekend's Earth Day festivals to rally public opposition against the project.

Members of the Heart of the River Coalition will hand out information Saturday at downtown Indianapolis' Earth Day Indiana festival and at Anderson's Earth Day Arborfest.

The group wants Indiana residents to urge Governor Mike Pence to halt state support of the proposed Mounds Lake Reservoir.

The reservoir would be created by damming the White River in Anderson, creating a reservoir along what's now seven miles of free-flowing river.

Opponents say the project would destroy a rare wetland and inundate at least one third of Mounds State Park, a park known for earthworks built more than 2,000 years ago by the Adena-Hopewell people.
