Race for the Cure participation down again
A top organizer says participation in this year's Komen Race for the Cure in Indianapolis fell to 21,380 participants.
Central Indiana Susan G. Komen for the Cure Executive Director Dana Curish tells The Indianapolis Star the numbers for Saturday's event were down because poor weather in recent years, competing events such as the Carmel Marathon and a lingering controversy in the group's national office over funding Planned Parenthood.
Two years ago the event drew about 37,000 participants, but the controversy last year helped drive down participation to about 27,000.
It's not clear yet how much money this year's race raised, but Curish says it might be down from last year's $2 million because of the lower participation.
