A southern Indiana judge has appointed two psychiatrists to evaluate a 19-year-old accused of murder whose attorney says he is considering a defense strategy of mental disease or defect.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports public defender Jake Warrum said Thursday that the evaluation of Mason Hughes could be used at the trial and if he is convicted, at the sentencing. Hughes and 47-year-old Brenda Dossett are charged with murder in the shooting death of her estranged husband, Gilbert Dossett.

Police have described his death as a murder-for-hire scheme staged to look like a house robbery. Police say Hughes was the boyfriend of Brenda Dossett's daughter. Both face possible sentence of life without parole if convicted.
