Pot-growing operation investigated as possible cause of deadly fire

Police are investigating whether or not an illegal pot-growing operation contributed to a fire that claimed the lives of three-year-old twin boys.

Landon and Liam Abbott died Sunday after a fire ripped through their home on Brandy Kay Court near Lafayette. A neighbor called 911 after seeing flames shoot from the back of the house.

The toddlers were rushed to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Their father, 31-year-old Brandon L. Abbott, was inside at the time, along with Nicole L. Thomas. Rescuers found them on the front lawn with injuries from the fire. Both were taken to hospitals to be treated, but Brandon left as soon as he heard about his sons. Doctors treated Thomas for burns and smoke inhalation.

The house is now boarded up and there are two crosses placed out front in memory of the twin brothers who lost their lives.

The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office and the Indiana State Fire Marshal are conducting the investigation. The local newspaper is reporting suspicions of a marijuana-growing operation in the house.

There is no word yet on how long it will take to determine exactly what room the fire started in and the cause.
