Police search east side for suspects who shot at State Troopers overnight

Two Indiana State Troopers were fired upon by a suspect in a vehicle they stopped at 21st & Mitthoefer Road overnight.  The driver and passenger of the pearl-colored Cadillac left the vehicle after shots were fired around midnight.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Indiana State Police set up a perimeter around the area.  SWAT was called out along with an IMPD helicopter.  After searching for approximately four hours, police released their perimeter.

One of the suspects may have been found, but police are still looking for the other suspect and a weapon.

IMPD and ISP patrols were in that area because gunshots had been reported in the area of the Lakeview Apartments earlier last night.

Troopers in their unmarked Chevy Tahoe saw a 2002 White four-door Cadillac driving in the apartment complex in what they described as a suspicious manner, turning in and out of drives. When the unmarked state police Tahoe was behind the Cadillac, the driver accelerated rapidly toward the exit. The police vehicle was following the Cadillac, but had not activated any emergency equipment.  That's when, police say, the Cadillac slowed and the passenger leaned out the window of the moving car and fired multiple rifle shots at the state police vehicle.

The Troopers weren't injured and no shots were returned by State Police during the incident.

The Cadillac then sped out of the apartment complex, headed North on Mitthoefer, with the Troopers in full pursuit with lights and siren activated. As the Cadillac approached the intersection of 30th & Mitthoefer, the driver lost control and struck a guardrail on the northeast corner of the intersection. The driver and passenger abandoned the disabled car and ran away.

Police were able to locate and detain a person of interest within 45 minutes.  At this point, he has not been arrested.

"We have, potentially, two suspects still at large," said State Police spokesman Dave Bursten, who said the suspects are considered a danger to the community.

Police have recovered a rifle, according to Bursten, and are examining the Cadillac for clues.

Anyone with information about either suspect should call the Indiana State Police at 800-582-8440, or call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS (8477).
