FRANKLIN - Police say a man wounded his ex-girlfriend by firing shots through the front door of her apartment in central Indiana and then shot himself in the head after officers stopped his car in northeastern Indiana.

Franklin police say 44-year-old Douglas Vieth of Ossian fired two shots after trying late Tuesday to enter the apartment of a 40-year-old woman, with one bullet hitting her in the arm. The Daily Journal reports that Vieth was gone when officers arrived.

Police agencies around Ossian, about 15 miles south of Fort Wayne, were asked to watch for him. Police say his vehicle was spotted about 3 a.m. Wednesday in Huntington County and that he shot himself in the head three times.

Vieth was listed in critical condition at a Fort Wayne hospital.
