Police lower death toll in Brazil fire to 232

A police spokesman says officials have lowered the known death toll in from the blaze that swept through a Brazilian nightclub to 232.

Major Cleberton Braida Bastianello earlier said 245 had died, but he says a new count of bodies brought to a local gymnasium led to a lower count.

Over 240 people are reported to have died in a nightclub fire in Brazil early Sunday morning.

The Associated Press reports that the death toll has reached 245 in the Santa Maria incident. The club is located in a university town in the southern part of the country near the Argentina and Uruguay borders.

The fire broke out at around 2:00 am at the Kiss club during a musical performance.

According to a security guard at the club, the venue was at its maximum capacity somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 people. Reports say that club-goers were shoving each other to escape.

Officials are still looking into the cause of the fire.
