The Johnson County Sheriff's Department was involved in a police action shooting Wednesday that left a suspect dead.

It happened in the area of 900 East and State Road 44 near a home on the Johnson-Shelby County line just before 2:00 pm. No officers were injured.

When officers asked him to show his identification, the man fled. He was later identified as Derek J. Hobson, 25, of Greenwood.

Officers tried to use stun guns to stop Hobson, but they didn't connect with him and he continued to flee.

According to police, as Hobson was running, he turned and pointed a semi-automatic pistol at two deputies. The deputies fired their weapons.

Hobson was struck multiple times and fell to the ground. Medical assistance was called to the scene , but the wound was fatal. Hobson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police later determined Hobson was wanted on a battery count out of Marion County, and was also on parole for burglary out of Johnson County.

Neither deputy was injured as a result of the shooting incident. The deputies have been identified as Dan Combs, 36 a one-year veteran and Lewis Wiser, 29 a two-year veteran.
