Police say a fellow officer is lucky to be okay after his cruiser was hit head-on by a man driving a stolen car.

It happened around 3:30 am Thursday morning near Holt Road and West Washington Street. The Indianapolis Metro Police Department Dodge Charger was seriously damaged, as was the stolen Ford Focus.

Police say they tried to stop a man on a motorcycle as part of an investigation into shots fired. That man fled on the motorcycle, crashed nearby and stole the Focus. He took off in the car without his headlights on and slammed into the police cruiser at the intersection of Washington and Wichser Avenue.

The officer was checked out for injuries, and fellow officers say he's lucky he wasn't badly hurt.

"You just never know what's going to come around the corner and this is a classic example of that," said Sgt. Steve Davis, IMPD.

Officers on the scene were surprised the airbags in the IMPD Dodge Charger didn't deploy. Chrysler has order the recall of some 120,000 cars, including the Charger, due to airbag issues. It's unclear if the cruiser involved was part of the recall.
