A three-year-old boy who was seriously injured by a gunshot wound is believed to have shot himself.
The Brown County Sheriff's Department says the boy remains at Riley Hospital after the shooting Sunday night. Authorities do not suspect foul play.
The Brown County Sheriff's Department responded to a call for help from a home in the 6300 block of Spearsville Road early Sunday evening.
According to investigators, the boy found the .40 caliber handgun at a relative's home and it went off while in the child's possession.
The boy was rushed to Riley Hospital by Lifeline helicopter.
The Brown County Sheriff's Department has asked the Indiana State Police to investigate the incident.
A fund has been established to help the child's family pay his health care expenses and related costs. The family does not want to release the boy's name but he goes by the nickname "Little Man".
Donations can be made to the "Little Man Fund" at the Nashville branch of Fifth Third Bank. Questions should be directed to the bank by calling 812-988-2241 option 3.
