A Plainfield middle school math teacher has resigned after being charged with attempted child molestation, according to a spokesperson for the school system.

Joseph Singleton was accused in an incident that involved a middle school student, according to the spokesperson. Superintendent Scott Olinger has met with the family of the student.

In a release, the school corporation said it is cooperating with the Hendricks County Sheriff's Department, who is conducting the investigation in conjunction with other agencies.

Singleton is a former finalist for "Indiana Teacher of the Year" according to the town of Plainfield.

The school district said in an email to parents that Superintendent Scott Olinger met with the family of the student.

"The school corporation wants to assure parents and the community that the safety and security of our students is our top priority," the email stated.
