Interstate 65 northbound was closed in Johnson County for three hours overnight after a person was struck in the roadway and died at the scene.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Rich Myers says 21-year-old Cody Small had called his girlfriend to pick him up from work late Wednesday and decided to walk on the interstate to meet her. Small was struck by a car in the northbound middle lane as he attempted to cross the highway about 10 miles south of Indianapolis.

Police believe Small was trying to cross to the southbound lanes so his girlfriend would see him. They say the driver tried to avoid hitting him.

Police say the Indianapolis man died at the scene. The driver wasn't injured and stopped at the scene.

The highway's northbound lanes were closed for about two hours and reopened around 2:00 am.
