Gov. Mike Pence is urging Indiana residents to have plenty of food, water and other necessities on hand as a major winter storm and dangerous cold near the state.

Pence encouraged Hoosiers on Saturday to assemble an emergency preparedness kit with plenty of non-perishable food and water and to fill any necessary prescriptions. He also urged residents not to travel during the storm and to check on neighbors, relatives and friends who may need help.

A winter storm warning covers all of Indiana from Saturday night through Sunday night. The National Weather Service says the storm will dump between eight and 12 inches of wind-driven snow on central Indiana, with lesser amounts to the north and south.

Subzero cold arrives Sunday night with dangerous wind chills up to minus 40.
