Pence security detail chief ministers to inmates

The man in charge of keeping bad guys away from Indiana Gov. Mike Pence also reaches out to those who strayed from the straight and narrow.

Indiana State Police Lt. Steve Whitaker oversees Pence's 15-member security detail as executive protection commander. He also has led gospel outreach meetings at the Hancock County Jail since 2006.

On a recent Tuesday evening, he stood holding his Bible in front of a dozen inmates at a work-release center adjacent to the jail in Greenfield. He spoke to nine men and three women about Joseph, the son of Jacob who was sold into slavery by his brothers in the book of Genesis.

He tells The Indianapolis Star that he hopes he planted a seed with the inmates.
