INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who killed a woman on the city's southwest side Friday night.

The woman was struck around 6:30 p.m. near Holt Road and Sam Jones Expressway. Investigators say the woman was walking north in the grass when a southbound SUV left the road and struck her.

The woman was hit so hard, her purse ended up on the other side of a fence along the National Guard base.

"Front end damage, as best we know. My guess is, it would be centered around the front, toward the passenger side. All we know is a silver, light-colored SUV that struck a victim and fled," said IMPD Maj. Richard Riddle.

Police believe the driver of the vehicle that struck the woman may have stopped to pick up debris left from their car and left the scene with that evidence.

If you saw something that could help, call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
