Painter looks to carve out new niche for Purdue

Matt Painter is turning Purdue into his kind of team.

He has more versatility and more scorers this season. Last year's promising freshmen, center A.J. Hammons and point guard Ronnie Johnson, are poised to take a major step forward and practices are more competitive.

Seven months ago, it looked like the Boilermakers were heading down a long road back to being a Big Ten title contender after finishing under .500 and missing the NCAA tournament for the first time in seven seasons.

Painter's Boilermakers return this season with more size and depth on the perimeter, a renewed focus on rebounding and defense and a solid foundation they can build on. They open the season at home Nov. 8 against Northern Kentucky.
