Operation Indy Commute I-65 gets underway this week
The big north/south split construction project is over, but another one is about to begin on the Indianapolis south side.
Crews will shift traffic Wednesday night on I-65 near the I-465 interchange to get vehicles away from the median. They will install new construction equipment there to build a new two-lane flyover ramp from westbound I-465 to southbound I-65.
The lane shifts will require alternating lane restrictions on northbound and southbound I-65 near I-465 (Exit 106) between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Walsh, the construction company doing the work, will also restrict the left lane of eastbound I-465 near I-65 (Exit 53) to install temporary concrete barrier wall along the median. The restriction will begin after 9 p.m. and is expected to end before 6 a.m.
On Friday night, Walsh plans to restrict the right lane of eastbound I-465 near I-65 (Exit 53) to install temporary concrete barrier wall along the shoulder. The barrier wall installation is weather dependent and could be postponed in the event of rain.
Overnight lane restrictions continue on northbound and southbound I-65 between I-465 (Exit 106) and Southport Road (Exit 103) between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Walsh is widening the interstate with temporary pavement in preparation for a traffic shift tentatively scheduled for next week. All traffic lanes on northbound and southbound I-65 will be shifted toward the median, allowing Walsh to begin installing temporary concrete barrier wall along the shoulders for construction of auxiliary lanes connecting I-465 and Southport Road ramps.
Widening for auxiliary lanes on I-465 connecting I-65 and Emerson Avenue ramps is expected to begin in 2014 and will require reconstruction of the Sherman Drive bridge.
Walsh plans to close the bridge on or after December 1. Sherman Drive traffic will be detoured to Carson Avenue over I-465. The bridge is expected to reopen by September 2014.
During construction, three lanes will be maintained in each direction on both I-65 and I-465 during peak traffic times. Traffic will be maintained on the existing I-65 and I-465 ramps until improvements are complete.
The contract allows for closure of up to 7 days on the westbound Southport Road entrance ramp to northbound I-65 to enhance worker and motorist safety as the ramp is connected to a new auxiliary lane to I-465. The project is expected to be complete by spring 2015.
Operation Indy Commute I-65 improvements include:
· Additional traffic lanes will be added to both directions of I-65 between Southport Road and I-465.
· Additional traffic lanes will be added to both directions of I-465 between I-65 and Emerson Avenue.
· A new two-lane flyover will replace the westbound I-465 loop ramp to southbound I-65.
· The northbound I-65 ramp to eastbound I-465 will be widened to two lanes.
· The existing I-465 ramp to southbound I-65 will be reconstructed on a new alignment.
· Widening I-465 will require closure and replacement of the Sherman Drive bridge.
