A South Carolina man has stepped in where the government left off.

Photos spread across the Internet Wednesday of the man mowing the lawn at the Lincoln Memorial while carrying a flag from his home state. WNEW-FM in Washington D.C. spoke with the man, identified as Chris Cox, who says he is part of the one-man "Memorial Militia."

The grounds around the monuments in then nation's capital have gone unmaintained during the federal government shutdown.

Cox told the radio station he didn't have political reasons to mow around the monuments on the national mall, but said he felt obligated to care for the facilities before this weekend's Million Vet March.

"These are our memorials. Do they think that we're just going to let them go to hell? No," Cox told WNEW reporter John Domen.

Cox also cleared a fallen branch from near the reflecting pool. He used a push mower to cut the grass around the Lincoln Memorial.

Park police let Cox work for a short time undisturbed, but later asked him to stop, long before he finished his job.

Cox says he hopes to include other volunteers before Sunday's veterans event.
